Fructus Auranti Citrus
Other names : Orange Fruit , Zhiqiao
Orange Fruit is the dried , immature fruit of Citrus Auranti L (Fam.Rutaceae)
Action : To regulate the flow of qi, remove its stagnation,
and alleviate distension
Indication : Distension and pain in the chest and hypochodriac
regions due to stagnation of qi, indigestion with retention of phlegm
and fluid; gastroptosis, prolapse of the rectum, prolapse of the
uterus.
Presentation : As it name suggest, Orange fruit ranks high
on the bitter taste scale, largely owing to the presence of intensely
bitter-tasting flavonoid glycosides such as naringin and neohesperidin.
Traditional Chinese healers treat a wide range of illness with the
fruit, from diarrhea to bloody stools and prolapse of the uterus,
anus, or rectum.
Radix Glycyrrhizae uralensis
Other names : Licorice root , Gan Cao, sweet wood
Licorice root is the dried root and rhizome of Glycyrrhizae uralensis
Fisch, (Fam.Leguminosae).
Action : To reinforce the function of the spleen and replenish
qi, to remove heat and counteract toxicity, to dispel phlegm and
relieve cough, to alleviate sposmadic pain, and to moderate drug
actions.
Indication : Weakness of the spleen and the stomach marked
by lassitude and weakness; cardiac palpitation and shortness of
breath; cough with much phlegm; spasmodic pain in the epigatrium,
abdomen and limbs; carbuncles of sores. It is often used for reducing
the toxic or drastic actions of other drugs.
Presentation : Licorice is a powerful herb that studies
suggest is probably useful in treating a number of conditions. In
terms of one of its oldest uses- as a cough remedy. Other studies
of this herb has also indicate that licorice extracts fights disease
causing bacteria such as Staphylococci and Streptococci, the Herpes
simplex virus and Candida Albicans, the fungus responsible for vaginal
yeast infections and oral thrush 4.
